How dogs resemble their owners [Nov. 16th, 2009|03:45 pm]
[Tags|]

This weekend when I was cleaning Bandit's ears, I noticed a bump that was bleeding so this morning I called the vet and took him in, expecting them to tell me it was a common problem and wouldn't hurt anything.

It's in fact a very uncommon problem in young dogs. It's common once they get older in their immune system starts breaking down, but when they're younger it's not supposed to happen. He thinks it's an inflammatory polyp caused by a yeast infection in Bandit's ears, which in turn is probably caused by food allergies, and the fact that Bandit's overweight doesn't help him. So I got a lecture on not letting my dog be fat, what food allergies mean in dogs, and what I should feed him, which is a ridiculously expensive prescription dog food that while based on the same proteins as other dog foods, is already broken down so the dog's system doesn't recognize it. He has to be on this diet for 10-12 weeks and can't eat anything else. Not even lick the bowl of another dog who has eaten a different food. He can't even play with toys that might have food remnants on them. Eeek! First, I'm going to have to feed Brooklyn the ridiculously expensive food. Then, I'll have to throw away all their toys, and Bandit won't really be able to go anywhere where other dogs eat or chew on toys. Poor little peanut. Oh! and he's getting fed half as much food from now on!

I also have drops I need to put in his ears every day for 2 weeks and if his ear doesn't get better, then we have to go back to the vet. This is a bummer, for sure, but hopefully this will be the solution. Otherwise we're looking at thyroid and cancer tests, and I'd rather just have him have a food allergy. The biggest hurdle is going to be the stupid cat and how bandit enjoys getting into the litter box.

The funny part is his diet is very similar to the diet I was on last year because of the extra yeast in my tummy. So I'm probably taking this more personally than a lot of other people would, but he's my little munchkin and I want him around for a long time. I know the vet's speech was meant to scare me, but he did a good job!!

Happy Candy is Still on Sale day!

I was sooo upset when I thought bags of Crunch bars weren't here this year, but I only needed to be patient. The mini Crunch is my favorite. It's soooo much better than the real size crunch bar, I think because it's thicker.

Halloween was fun. We were still a bit hungover from a birthday party on Friday night. We carved pumpkins, and had one, lonely trick or treater, my niece who was dressed as spiderman. The dogs were a pumpkin and a skunk, they had to switch costumes because Brooklyn kept trying to eat his skunk costume. Pictures should come tonight. I LOVED our pumpkins, and then yesterday I roasted the seeds and they were yummy! I also roasted a Turkey yesterday, so that should feed us for a few days since we're both working really hectic schedules this week.

Fall is officially here, as in all the leaves are falling off the trees. The tree outside my window at work, the one bright visual I have during my day, only has about 6 leaves left on it. And now with the time change, I feel like all I see is darkness. *sigh*

shivering [Oct. 16th, 2009|12:11 pm]
I've been seeing ads for Dunkin' Donuts pumpkin latte, which last year I thought I would like and I didn't, so they're not all that enticing. Except today I came to the realization that what comes after the pumpkin latte is the GINGERBREAD latte, and that, my friend, is heaven in a cardboard cup. It's like drinking a cookie. If it doesn't come this year, I will be so upset!

I took Bandit to the park yesterday and he was sooo happy! It's perfect Bandit weather. Well, perfect for him is 20 degrees with snow on the ground, but he accepted 50 with a slight breeze. I was less than thrilled at this sudden drop in temperature, but it made a happy puppy.

What has me even more sad is the drop in temperature AGAIN. It's in the low 40's today. It's OCTOBER. Last night it was 36 when I got home at 7. Ugh! I bet there was frost last night too, glad I missed it!

Did I ever tell you the story of how we were running errands and I was in my sweat pants and John decided we should go to dinner to real fancy place like Applebee's (ok, as fancy a place where he could order a steak and I could still be wearing my sweatpants) and I only agreed on the condition that I got to buy a bra so I wouldn't be bra-less and wearing sweat pants at a place that had menus (though I hate Applebee's, so I'm not sure why I cared). Anyway, I bought an evil, front-clasping bra that took me much too long to put on in the car (during which John asked if I needed help) and then sat through a very un!comfortable dinner with the Evil.Bra on.

This morning I thought it would be a good idea to wear this same bra to work. This same bra that I haven't worn since that one day when I could barely wear it for an hour.

That bra.

I can't wait to go home.

Ways to Ruin a Vacation [Sep. 24th, 2009|03:26 pm]
[Tags|]

I'm soooo happy to be getting out of here! The boss-man is driving me crazy today with his lack of common sense. Step it up and think for a minute!  I'm flying out to Arizona tomorrow morning, and while I'm sooo excited to see the people I'm going to see, I probably should have planned a lot more timing-wise. Then again, when I bought the tickets 2 months ago, I didn't realize I'd be doing so much in that time.  Here are a few good ways to make a less-than-well-planned vacation start out badly:

1. A few weeks before you leave, move. That way you won't be able to find anything you own when you pack and you end up buying new crap you don't need and can't afford, just to fill a suitcase.

2. A week before you leave, buy a new car.  Make sure this car has a turbo engine and requires top shelf champagne for gasoline. While you're paying at least an extra 20 cents per gallon for gasoline, make sure this car holds at least 8 more gallons than your previous car, so you're not leaving that gas station for less than $50 on gas your parents are probably going to use up in 3 days and then they'll put in the boone's farm of gasoline so you can come home to some lovely knocking noises.

3. The day before you leave, register the car mentioned in #2 above.

4. Make sure you don't have an address yet, that way your bills won't find you and you'll have some nice late payments when you get home.

5. Have your boyfriend get the flu so he's afraid to kiss you before you leave for 10 days.

6. Two weeks before, go to a wedding in Boston and leave your camera in a cab. When you call the cab company, you will be told repeatedly the manager is who you need to speak with, but the manager will never be available, nor will the manager return your calls. Now you can spend money on a new camera to take pictures of those adorable little munchkins living in the desert.

7. Find any other way possible to spend all your money, so all you have left is enough to pay the $15 checked baggage charge (come on!) and hopefully enough to put some vodka in that oj before you get on the plane.
a slighly inappropriate improvement...  )

spiller! [Sep. 22nd, 2009|12:02 pm]
Who wants to tell me how to make $100,000 a year from the comfort of my own home, or at least with the ability to dictate my own schedule and not have to listen to assholes all day? No one? Ok, moving on.

I'm tired today. Like having trouble supporting my head and Bandit's bed under my desk is looking like a good place to take a nap.  He's not using it, he's laying by the back door.

I'm also having a super spiller day, though I would argue is the fault of my food, and not my fault. I made a PB&J on toast when I got to work and the melty peanut butter oozed out onto my pants, my hands, and then got put on my coffee cup and a few letters going to the Court. I'm telling everyone it was "take your child to work day". Maybe I'll sign the letters in finger paint.  A shout wipe worked wonders on my pants.
Then I heated up a quesadilla for lunch and cheese oozed out onto my pants.  Shout wipe couldn't stand up to the power of cheese though, and there's still a stain there. On black pants, I might add. A nice crusty, white stain.
And most recently I missed my mouth while sipping coffee and spilled on my white shirt. Awesome.

New house resolution #1 [Sep. 21st, 2009|11:16 am]
From now until I run out of bathroom products, I am not buying any new bathroom products.  Upon looking at the very full box of very new and partially used bottles, I realized I don't need to buy much of anything in the personal hygiene/beauty realm.  Here's hoping I stick to this!

he loves me [Sep. 17th, 2009|03:22 pm]
Aww, my boyfriend is cute! He wants to be with me when I pick up my new car, but he couldn't get a ride all the way to where I work (he doesn't drive), so he got dropped off a couple miles away and he's walking the rest of the way!

Totally makes up for the fact that my boss is simultaneously senile and five years old.

Although it's possible J loves this car more than he loves me :P (not really, he's just really excited about it)

[Current Music |the deafening hum of office equipment]

For those of you who recall, my dear cat Buster has been outside for a few weeks now.  He seems to only love us for our food, but whatever.  Anyway, there's this gross abandoned house trailer across the street that a few other cats live in, and he seemed to be frequenting this location (I feared for his life every time I saw him waddle across the road!).  Yesterday when I got home from work the trailer was a pile of rubble and there was an excavator parked next to it.  I'm sure Buster had the good sense to run when the walls came tumbling down, but now I wonder where he's spending his days.  J says he came home last night, but the only real proof is an empty food dish, when any creature could have eaten his cat food.

In better news, our cottage is ready for us to move in!! Now we just need to get serious about packing and downsizing (eek!)

And I successfully made a lobster and crab quiche last night that was delicious! It took about 2 hours because I had no idea what I was doing and rolling out the pie dough was tricky (seriously, rolling out pie dough was my job for 3 summers, but this dough was different).  The good news is that soon I will close enough to my mom (who makes pie dough in bulk) that I probably won't have to make my own dough for quite some time!

I'm wearing a skirt I really love today.  It makes me feel good about myself.

superstition [Jun. 15th, 2009|05:00 pm]
A friend of a friend of mine practices Reiki (sp?) and I find this practice somewhat interesting, though I've never participated.  The idea of using body energies and balance kind of fascinates me in general.  Anyway, she was at my friend's house this past weekend and as a parlor trick was reading everyone's life line's and when it came to mine she said nothing and gave me my hand back.

Someone asked her who had the shortest in the room and she silently pointed to me as I was still sitting next to her.

She also claims she successfully predicted the death of her husband (she saw 30 on his hand and he died at 32).

When I was 18 a psychic told me I wouldn't live to see 35.

This is all starting to freak me out.  But I guess it's up to me to defy the odds? I wish I could let it go, but I can't stop thinking about it and staring at my hand.

I won the lottery! [May. 26th, 2009|03:59 pm]
Not really, but fortune does seem to be smiling on me today.  First, I got my renewal for my car insurance and I was dreading the amount, but it went down almost $200!! I don't know how or why, but I want to pay it fast before they change their minds!

Second, I forgot about my tax return! In my head I had a list of things I needed to go to the bank for, including cashing my State refund check, but I left it in my car for, oh, the past month.  And that pretty much pays my car insurance.

Third, there's rumor we're getting a bonus this week.  Woo!

And to think I was more than a little cranky when I came to work this morning :)

Lastly, I dropped a salt grinder at Target and it spewed salt everywhere.  I hope this doesn't negate the good luck I've had so far :)

Relay for Life!! [May. 14th, 2009|10:48 am]
Hello everyone!  I'm participating in "Relay for LIfe" to raise money for cancer research, since my dad has lung cancer this has been a pretty big event in my family for the past couple of years.  Last year was a lot of fun, and I'm really excited to have J5 go this year.

EXCEPT! with all the hubbub of moving and other things, I kind of forgot about  when the Relay was and it snuck up and so far I've only raised $10 (my entrance fee).  If any of you could donate a little bit, I would really appreciate it!! Technically, my mom said I could walk in her place since she's in Wyoming on a last minute trip to visit my sister, but I feel kind of bad that I haven't done much.

This is the link to my page main.acsevents.org/goto/melodycoombs

Even if you don't donate, I will update this weekend on everything that happens, and my new camera came today, so maybe there will be some pictures!!

My favorite part is the "luminaries" when they turn off all the lights, and the track is only lit by candles in bags that people have decorated for their loved ones.  It's very touching.   And pancakes in the morning, also an excellent part!!

Gay Marriage in Maine [May. 6th, 2009|04:15 pm]
Maine passed gay marriage!! woo!! pressherald.mainetoday.com/story.php

Baldacci signs same-sex marriage into law

Maine becomes the fifth state to allow same-sex marriage. The law will take effect 90 days after the end of the legislative session in June.

From staff and wire reports May 6, 2009

Update: 2:50 p.m.

AUGUSTA -- Democratic Gov. John Baldacci today signed into law a bill allowing gay marriage, making Maine the fifth state to allow people of the same sex to wed.

The governor's signature came barely an hour after the measure won final approval from the Maine Senate, which voted 21-13, with one absent, to pass the law. The House passed the bill Tuesday.

The law's passage also sets up a likely referendum campaign, as opponentspledged to launch a petition drive to overturn the law at the statewide ballot box. Baldacci said in a statement that while he has opposed gay marriage in the past, “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage. “This new law does not force any religion to recognize a marriage that falls outside of its beliefs," the governor said. "It does not require the church to perform any ceremony with which it disagrees. Instead, it reaffirms the separation of church and state. “It guarantees that Maine citizens will be treated equally under Maine’s civil marriage laws, and that is the responsibility of government," Baldacci said.

Tuesday's vote moved New England closer to allowing same-sex marriage throughout the region.

New Hampshire legislators were also poised to send a gay marriage bill to their governor, who hasn't indicated whether he'll sign it. If he does, Rhode Island would be the region's sole holdout. The Maine bill authorizes marriage between any two people rather than between one man and one woman, as state law currently allows. Debate in the Senate was brief. Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell, D-Vassalboro, turned the gavel over to an openly gay member, Sen. Lawrence Bliss, D-South Portland, to preside over the final vote. Republican Sen. Debra Plowman of Hampden argued that the bill was being passed "at the expense of the people of faith."

"You are making a decision that is not well-founded," warned Plowman.

But Senate Majority Leader Philip Bartlett II said the bill does not compel religious institutions to recognize gay marriage.

"We respect religious liberties. ... This is long overdue," said Bartlett, D-Gorham.

Betsy Smith, executive director of Equality Maine, praised the bill’s passage.

“Today, the Legislature heard the stories loud and clear. The governor heard their stories loud and clear,” she said. “Today, discrimination against gay and lesbian families has finally been ended.”

Opponents of gay marriage said they were disappointed in the governor, and in his decision to sign the bill so quickly.

“We feel he kind of shortchanged us all,” said The Rev. Bob Emrich, pastor of Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church in Plymouth and a founder of the Maine Marriage Alliance, which opposes the law. “But that’s his prerogative. He’s the governor.”

Maine is now the fourth state in New England to allow same-sex marriages.

Connecticut enacted a bill after being ordered to allow gay marriages by the

courts, and Vermont passed a bill over the governor's veto. New Hampshire's House was also expected to vote on a bill today and send it to Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat.

Massachusetts' high court has ordered the state to recognize gay marriages.

In Rhode Island, a bill to legalize same-sex marriage has been introduced but is not expected to pass this year.

Outside New England, Iowa is recognizing gay marriages on court orders. The practice was briefly legal in California before voters banned it.

12:45 p.m.

AUGUSTA – Democratic Gov. John Baldacci today signed into law a bill allowing gay marriage, making Maine the fifth state to allow same-sex marriage.

The governor's signature came barely an hour after the measure won final approval in the state Legislature, with a final 21-13 vote in favor in the Maine Senate.

The governor's signature means the law would take effect in 90 days after the end of the legislative session. It may not, however, be the last word: Opponents of same-sex marriage are gearing up to mount a so-called "people's veto" campaign that would put the issue to a statewide vote in November.

I finally bought a new camera!!  So soon you will all have more pictures of things in my life than you know what to do with!*

*this is a lie.  Although there is a possibility that with a nicer/faster camera I will take more pictures, chances are I will still be just as slow at putting them on my computer and then uploading them to LJ.  Too many steps! :)

Anyway, camera should arrive by the weekend.  Just in time to take pictures for Mother's day!! And I really need to figure out what to get the momma, and then I need to remind J5 that he should do something nice for his too.

things! [Apr. 10th, 2009|01:34 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

J5 made a turkey last night and it was DELICIOUS.  He also made stuffing, mashed potatoes and corn.  This was both of our first times making gravy, and I think it came out pretty good, if I do say so myself :)  He also invited his friend and his girlfriend over, I had only met her once before, but I like her well enough.  I have high expectations for who dates his best friend, so I'm hoping she'll meet those expectations :)

I think I've mentioned this before, but J5's best friend was the first boy I ever kissed.  I gave him a kiss on the cheek on the bus in first grade.   We actually joke about that a lot now, and I sometimes refer to them as "first" and "last".

J5 is rebuilding my '68 VW Bug for me!  Again, I might have mentioned that before, I should probably read my own posts.  Anyway, work is actually getting started on it and I'm sooo excited! I stayed home sick from work on Tuesday and slept most of the day, but we spent the afternoon looking through VW magazines I had collected a few years ago to get ideas for how we want it to look.   It's possible I now have too many ideas.  I think I'm going with black and red for the paint job and interior, and I even found a website where I can custom order black & red interior door panels! Hooray!  There's still a lot of decisions to be done, but I think we'll get some of the body work done this weekend and I ordered some pieces of steel that need to be welded on to replace sections that have big dents in them.  Fun!  I can't wait for the car to run again! I'm even thinking of creating a blog to update people on the progress.  I kind of wish all of this could have happened while my grandfather was alive, since he's the one who gave me the car, but as long it's happening at all, I'm happy.

For a Friday, today hasn't been half bad at work.  I'm sure the afternoon will get worse because I said that, but what can you do?

I think I'm getting my cold back again :(  I'm tired of being sick, but at least it's not the worst cold ever.  I was so excited that I felt so much better after my sick day the other day, and that the sick day served it's desired purpose, and today I woke up sick all over again.  I think my niece passed the cold back to me.

Famous people in Maine [Mar. 9th, 2009|09:54 am]
My brother is dumb!  So hopefully some of you remember all the shrimp my brother and his friends have been catching, and maybe one or two of you remember me saying that Lee Pace, Ned the Piemaker from Pushing Daisies, was staying up here for awhile this past summer.

Yesterday my brother comes in the house and says, "you know that show Pushing Daisies?  Did you know the lead actor is Lee Pace?" Yes, yes I did know this.  "Oh, well he went shrimping with us last week!  He's a real nice guy."  Oh, of course he is!  Heh, on the other hand I kind of love how oblivious my brother is, and that he spent the whole day making fun of Lee without knowing who he is.   Who knows, maybe he's still around here somewhere and I'll finally get to run into him!
